About This Project

Taking influence from Scandi Barn styles, a modern spin on the farmhouse, This is a home that embraces clean lines and textures. Thoughtfully designed, this 385 sqm four-bedroom H shaped home in Gloucester was built on a strong collaborative relationship with our clients and a focus on their vision. The end result is a quality build that is both practical and beautiful.

On approach you are greeted by an impressive façade, clad in 405mm wide vertical Stria painted in Colorbond Monument.  Over size Merbau hardwood timber post and timber door styled against the reclaimed look of Austral’s San Selmo bricks give that perfect juxtaposition between moody, Scandi sleek and rustic. The Austral San Selmo brick was initially delayed due to covid,  however staying true to our clients’ vision, they decided to wait, which was the correct decision, resulting in an incredibly beautiful facade, true to the Scandi Barn style.

The striking entrance invites you into a wide foyer with a custom-made hardwood shelf and round mirror over in the entry foyer alcove. To the right of the entry foyer sees a wing of three bedrooms and a family bathroom. Moving beyond the bedrooms is an oversized garage with a wall of storage cupboards and study to the left. Further down the hall you pass a media room on your left and an expansive outdoor area with sliding glass doors overlooking the hardwood deck and the pool. “Wet Look”, Hit and Miss” finish on the polished concrete floors has been used throughout all high traffic areas, with carpet to the bedrooms.

The separation of space, perfect for this busy family with teenage children, means that you feel the shift of purpose and space as you move through the home. On entering the main living zone, you are greeted with the impressive open plan, kitchen, dining and living area, with access to both the previously mentioned deck as well as another outdoor alfresco area facing northeast placed at the end of the family room. This space interacts so well with the central pool area the home has been design around.

Flooded in natural light, the considered design of the entertainer’s kitchen includes an island bench that is the centre piece of the kitchen, and also doubles as a meals area, with the suspended slab of stone, supported via a steel framework. The hidden oversized butler’s pantry with floor to ceiling louvre window, floods the space with natural light. The butler’s pantry has loads of storage and clever design, with a home for everything.

The hall beside the kitchen area leads off to an expansive laundry, that has an abundance of storage and a 3rd toilet with access to the outside for ease of access when out in the garden. The master suite is generous in its size with a half-height VJ feature wall as the bedhead, walk through walk-in robe with practical storage and make up area. From the walk-in robe area, you enter the large ensuite featuring a walk-in shower, with tiled wall and double bowl vanity.

Considered window placement, design and selection play an integral part in the passive solar design. The home has been designed to take in the view of the rolling hills in the distance from the main living and entertaining areas. This gave us the luxury of a north-eastern orientation, which has made the home very comfortable in all seasons. The benefit of this to the energy use of the home is fantastic given the Gloucester climate ranges from regular 40 degree days in summer to single digit days in winter. Ducted air conditioning and a gorgeous modern woodfire takes care of the heating and cooling and are off set by a 9 kw PV system.

Our clients had a very specific brief, requiring a large family home and a specific look they waited to achieve. Through a collaboration of ideas and being open to suggestions on different ways to achieve this look through design and material selections, we were able to stay true to their vision internally and externally. The final design and build is a home that ticks all the boxes on their wish list and was able to be built within their budget range.
