Our clients brief: create a Mid Century Modern home with a pool, private courtyard-style entertaining areas, and satisfy our client’s wish for a level home with no steps, which would take them effortlessly into the later years of life.
The facade of the home was very important to our client – they had a very specific look that they desired. They essentially wanted to have a modern façade that concealed a more cost-effective roof option behind a crisp rendered front parapet.
Externally, the home uses simple clean lines to create a striking presence within the streetscape. The use of crisp white cement rendered walls teamed with Blackbutt hardwood ship-lap cladding, and coupled with beautiful recycled convict bricks that our client salvaged 20 years ago and had been waiting to upcycle into his next dream project.
Brick rendered planter boxes have been used both in the design of the façade and in the retaining of the rear courtyard. The internal central private courtyard uses CSR Cemintel cladding to create yet another area of interest.
Internally, the home is bold and eclectic. Moody, jewel-like tones and high-end wallpapers coupled with their interior vision of an eclectic mix of old and new furnishings makes this home a sumptuous feast for the eyes.
The use of 9-foot ceilings, wide hallways, and solid blackbutt floors seamlessly draw you through the home into an open plan living/kitchen/dining and family room to the rear.
Hardwood decking to the alfresco entertaining decks complement a gorgeous alfresco ceiling that has been lined with hardwood v joint lining boards.
These lovely uses of timber accents throughout talk to the antique pieces of timber furniture that are eclectically mixed with the Mid Century modern features in this home.
A great design that allows opportunities to be connected to the outdoors and tranquil places to sit depending on the weather or time of day. A favourite feature is the kitchen splashback window – our clients asked us to design a window with a gas strut that opens up as a servery window into their private courtyard…….sundowners anyone!!
Where this home really shines though is the main living zone – the clever use of a recessed no-post corner stacker door system when opened to the alfresco deck melds the space making the indoor-outdoor experience seamless. We even managed to carve out a small hidden office in this area – close the doors and you would never know it was there.
The kitchen joinery was a definite challenge, and our joiners and stone masons had their work cut out for them. Our clients requested a statement island bench that is not only unique in shape, but has angled bar backs, all clad with Dekton porcelain surfaces. The outcome is a Mid Century modern kitchen that sure makes a statement. The island is backed up by custom joinery with soft-close hardware, 2 pack painted finishes and functional workspace.
Separation of the master suite from the balance of the bedrooms was an important privacy feature. The master suite is a work of art. Specially commissioned high-end silk embroidered fabric wraps the custom-made bedhead that dominates the wall of the bed. Behind is an impressive walk around robe hiding elegant custom joinery. The high end ensuite with floating vanity and recessed shaving cabinets conceal the toilet and the shower behind.
Guests in this home have their own designated wing with 3 queen size bedrooms. The resort style bathroom with freestanding bath, wall hung vanity and large format Italian porcelain tiles to the ceiling add to the feeling of indulgent luxury.
The oversize garage with workshop was completed with a red epoxy floor finish to complement some very sleek looking cars.
Our project did not finish with just the build of the home. We were also commissioned to build the retaining walls, SlimWall insulated fencing to the rear garden area, Colorbond boundary fencing and glass pool fencing.
And in a tradition stretching back 4 generations they – like their families before them – named their home “Trefusis” and proudly display it over their door as a reminder of the importance of building things of quality that stand the test of time.
